Applications
Geosynthetics do seven or eight things. Every product on this site is an answer to one of them — and most systems need three at once.
01Containment & barrier

Keeping a liquid, a leachate or a gas inside a defined volume — and keeping it out of groundwater. The governing properties are permeability, chemical resistance and long-term stress crack resistance, not tensile strength.
02Separation
+
Holding an aggregate layer and a soft subgrade apart so the two do not intermix under repeated loading. Aggregate stays load-bearing, and the design thickness stays the design thickness.
03Filtration
+
Letting water pass while retaining the soil particles behind it. Filter compatibility is a relationship between the soil grading curve and the geotextile's O90 — a filter that is too fine blinds, one that is too open piping.
04Drainage
+
Carrying water or gas in the plane of the material to a collection point. A geocomposite replaces a graded aggregate blanket with a measured, repeatable transmissivity that does not vary with what the quarry delivered.
05Reinforcement
+
Adding tensile capacity to soil, which has almost none. It is what makes a 1V:0.3H reinforced wall stand where the soil alone would need a 1V:2H slope, and what lets an embankment be built over ground that could not otherwise carry it.
06Stabilisation & confinement
+
Locking aggregate particles against movement so a granular layer behaves as a stiffer composite. Measured by junction efficiency and stiffness at small strain — a haul road built this way needs less rock and less maintenance.
07Protection & cushioning
+
Standing between the barrier and whatever would puncture it. Cushion geotextiles are selected from CBR puncture and a cylinder test at the project overburden pressure, not from mass per unit area alone.
08Erosion control
+
Holding soil in place against rainfall, channel flow and wave attack until vegetation takes over — or permanently, where it never will. Selection follows the design flow velocity and shear stress.
